If you happen to find yourself in LA over the next few weeks, be sure to check out this amazing show at Gallery 1988, opening May 20. The show, aptly titled, Another Dimension, showcases 50 artists’ works based on the original Rod Serling TV masterpiece, The Twilight Zone. My piece, Like A Tiny Doll Cut From A Shell And Brought To Life, is based on the episode, Stopover In A Quiet Town, where a married couple wakes up in a dollhouse after a long night of partying, only to find they are captives, and new toys, for a giant alien little girl.

If you’re in or around the Washington DC area, swing by illustrator — and sometime Lost At E Minor contributor — John Malloy’s first full solo exhibition at the Art Whino Gallery in National Harbor. The show which opens on February 21, takes its name — One Out of a Hundred — from his personal series of seven fine art works that center around the side effects of drugs as a metaphor for the media culture’s long-term effects on the human spirit. There will be more than forty limited edition prints and fifty works of original art on display and for sale, including illustration, fine art, and comics work. Read more

John Malloy’s new comics work, Queasy, is appearing in Image Comics’ upcoming POPGUN Anthology Volume Three. Next month he has new comics for Lemon coming out, as well as apparel design for a new line of Wall-Street-themed streetwear which can also be previewed at the Behance Gallery.

Illustrator and artist John Malloy has been working on a graphic novel called Channel One and, without wanting to sound too much like Paris Hilton, it’s looking pretty damn hot. Update! As of July 2009, John Malloy has aborted the graphic novel Channel One to focus more on other projects, including his autobiographical graphic novel, Queasy. Stay tuned for details. Read more

We featured John Malloy’s illustrations a little while back on Lost At E Minor, so we checked in with him to find out — from all the mags that he illustrates for — which one he always reads from cover to cover: ‘Without a doubt Lemon is a great read all the way through. The content is unique, and for the most part centered around things that interest me creatively. It’s also extremely well-executed visually with minimal advertising. The ads that are there appear seamlessly weaved into the layout’. Is there a type of canvas that you would love to illustrate on but haven’t yet? ‘Hmmm. That’s a good question. There are a lot of things I would like to try, like skateboards, fabric, metal, even an outdoor mural’. Read more

John Malloy is a graphic artist and comics creator whose work has been featured in BPM (illustration above) and Dazed & Confused magazine amongst others. As his bio notes, ‘he began drawing cartoons and rock stars at age six. Years later, he trained with one of the world’s most eminent trompe l’oeil painters, and was introduced to comics for the first time at age nineteen. His first graphic novel, Amnesia, emerged a few years later, combining painting, pen and ink with digital media. He currently lives in Baltimore’. [see also Mario Sughi]

There’s no shortage of bands channeling the surf rock and psych of the 1960s, but the Super Vacations’ sloppy vocals, drunken guitar riffs, and blown out production give them a knowing swagger that has as much in common with Beat Happening and Thee Headcoats as with the Pyramids. They seem to take pride in how bad they are live, but their debut record shows a lot of potential.

As a visual learner, the illustrated cooking instructions for the recipes on Recipe Look are easier for me to follow than the standard written recipes found in most cookbooks. I wish Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall would do an illustrated River Cottage book.
Matthew Dear’s Black City album totem
Our friends at Ghostly International are releasing Matthew Dear’s Black City album as a limited edition ‘totem’. A what? A totem – a limited edition metal bar used to access a private music chamber. Cool! We liked the idea, and checked in with Ghostly creative mind Will Calcutt to find out what the totems are, what they do, and what’s next. The totem is a black, industrial-style metal bar that unlocks stuff on the web, right? ‘The totem is a sculpture cast in bonded aluminum and it has a code that can be used to download/stream the new Matthew Dear album, Black City.’ Read more
