New Products / Joseph Joseph Pump Action Potato Smasher
November 13, 2009 | New Products | by Gerry Mak |
The problem I find with most gimmicky kitchen tools that claim to make cooking less of a chore is that they actually perform their tasks poorly, and the convenience gained through the devices is made up for with loss of flavor or texture. Garlic presses, for instance, waste a lot of garlic, and result in less actual garlic flavor going into your food. And really, crushing garlic with the side of a knife is about the most simple thing to do. Read more

November 4, 2009 | New Products | by Zolton |
We’re loving the new Flip Mino, the latest mini-device that gives you the ability to shoot and share anything that catches your eye, then connect it directly to your TV or computer and either edit the life out of the footage or watch it and guffaw at your own twisted directorial genius. Ha! Not surprisingly, the built-in FlipShare software is all about sharing, so you can blast out short and long format HD video as a link rather than an attachment. Now, get to work on that Blairwitch sequel sequel.

New Products / The Heart Bit interactive table lamp
October 28, 2009 | New Products | by Casper Johansson |
The Heart Bit lamp provides not only a functional white light, but also an emotional red accent light, which triggers at the exact same rhythm of user’s pulse. When a user touches the interface a sensor detects and register the beat and the embedded software transform it into lighting effects. People can experience their heartbeat and see their pulse represented trough ‘choreographic light’: it attempt to make ‘visible’ something ‘audible’, to make it, in a sense, more public and to share it.
Shelby Fischer is a mixed media artist living in Central Virginia. Her work is beautifully realised, laborious in its detail and subtle in its colorings. ‘My mixed media collages and assemblages blend surrealism with otherworldly imagery’, she says. ‘Each work is a fragment of an intuitive story — odd and mysterious narratives that are familiar echoes of a long lost, often twisted fantasy or nightmare’. Located on West Houston, Alphaville is my favorite gift store in Manhattan. It offers a great selection of vintage objects, from Nixon’s campaign buttons, to Sesame Street 80s mobiles, 50s greeting cards and the original Mr. Potato Head and his friends. It’s one of those places I walk into just to look but always end up buying something.
I was initially drawn to Belgium-born Christophe Coppen’s jewellery before discovering that he produces two mens and womens collections each year, consisting not only of jewellery, also of but couture pieces and home accessories. With seven interior collections to his name, and a past history as both a theater director and an actor, his work is an expression of his creative brilliance.
Nick Lu is an illustrator and designer based in Los Angeles who graduated from the Art Center College of Design. His work is like scattered memories across an endless canvas, built from tiny fragments of half-thought day-dreams. Read more

If animated wall drawings of severed heads and insect men ejecting their brains from their craniums is what people produce when they have too much time on their hands, then we should do their laundry for them and cook them dinner so they’ll have even more time on their hands.
Dating or married musician duos are always interesting beasts. Their intertwining affections and chemical reactions make for a potent alchemy of musical magic. Along the same vein of O-era Damien Rice and Lisa Hennigan, Glen Hansard (frontman of The Frames) and Marketa Irglova are the latest lovey-dovey couple with longings expressed in fingerpicked guitars and mourning cellos. Despite the intentions of many, it’s not so often that advertising — as an industry — truly thinks outside the box. Yet, when executed well, clever eye-catching advertising actually works. It does. As these examples will attest to. Read more

Forget battery powered vehicles. Cars made from ice are the future of transportation: no pollution, no honking horns, no painful rap music blasting out of souped up stereos. And if they melt, they melt. You just swim the rest of the way down the slipstream.
