If you’re headed to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport in June, watch out for a herd of, er, goats. Slated to provide “sustainable vegetation management grazing services” in a two-year $100,000 contract awarded to a Chicago-based company, they’ll be grazing on weeds and invasive plants on the 120 acres or so weedy grounds there.

The arragement will supposedly save the airport hefty landscape maintenance costs for fuel, labour, herbicides and miscellaneous equipment. Here’s hoping the hooved ones will at least get ear plugs or some sort of sound protection for their sonic welfare.

Creative agency Designbysoap were commissioned by a client to take a cold, hard look at the lifestyle habits of superheroes and comic book characters, then thought about whether they possessed regenerative powers, are human or immortal, and if they have died in a plot. The result is this rad infographic tabulating scores for how long they’ll live.

The verdict ranges from 60 years for Daredevil (“… a big risk taker and a drinker, meaning he’s likely to die around 60”) to 1,000+ years for Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer and Thor. Superman is placed in second spot with 750 good years ahead of him (“… has regenerative powers and only one weakness, giving him a very long lifespan”).

What happens when you combine the art of shaping a Bonsai Tree with the powerful strength of a Redwood? You get a little Bonsai Redwood tree. Now you can nurture the world’s largest tree in a small pot on your bedside table. Take a look at the Redwood Empire Bonsai Society to get a small taste of the mini Redwood growing culture. Many of these little trees are older than me.

This 105-year-old Texan woman really knows how to throw a party! For her 105th birthday, she organized a three-day event with over 200 guests. And not only does she still party, she also loves mowing her lawn and dancing. What’s the secret to this great-grandmother’s good health? Bacon. Despite the negative health-effects typically associated with the fatty meat, she claims that bacon has given her longevity and great health. Oscar Mayer loved her story so much that they sent the Wienermobil to her door with a special bacon delivery.

Using a real skeleton of the dinosaur as a guide, they tried to make it as realistic as possible. However, nobody really knows what their skin looked like, so for all we know, this dinosaur could have been tie-dye.

If you’ve ever wanted to send letters to your future self — or someone else — but never knew how to for obvious logistical reasons, now you can. In Shanghai, you can locate one of these crafty postcard cafes and post a card as far into the future as you like. There are 365 different boxes, one for each day of the coming year, and if you’d like to send your postcard anytime further into the future, you’ll just have to locate the postal box for that year. Let’s hope the cafes never go out of business — and hold your mail hostage in the process.

If you want to be destructive, you better be creative at it. This may sound to some of you like an oxymoron, but it’s apparently not. I love these beautifully executed hate mail postcards by Mr Bingo for the very fact that he’s managed to turn something so negative into something that is fun.
If you want to be destructive, you better be creative at it. This may sound to some of you like an oxymoron, but it’s apparently not. I love these beautifully executed hate mail postcards by Mr Bingo for the very fact that he’s managed to turn something so negative into something that is fun.

He explains on his website how the project itself came to life: ‘Last year I sent a postcard to a stranger called Jonathan Hopkins. It said on it “F*ck you Jonathan, f*ck you and f*ck your sh*t legs”. People seemed to be into it so I opened a service on my website, inviting strangers to pay me in return for an offensive postcard addressed to them (or whoever they ordered it for).I persevered with the project and now with over 400 ‘Hate Mails’ under my belt’.

In a fun ‘what-if’ twist, History TV channel Yesterday recently worked with a bunch of digital artists to give famous historical figures a 21st-century makeover. The results are amusing: Shakespeare looks positively preppy in his checkered shirt and flannel vest, while Marie Antoinette looks like a fidgety socialite. So, if clothes maketh the man, it explains why we can hardly recognise any of these people in their contemporary garb.

I recently picked up a copy of Cabinets of Wonder by Christine Davenne, which showcases extremely curious and often extravagant collections of eclectic oddities in homes and museums. Also referred to as ‘wunderkammer’, these cabinets hail from a centuries-old tradition in Europe during the Renaissance. Christine Fleurent shot more than 180 photographs for the book. These include skulls, hunting trophies, Egyptian artifacts and the alleged remains of mythological creatures. The pages are worth a good nosing around in.
