Cotswold-based photographer Kai Murphy photographs people and landscapes, using dilapidated equipment to convey a narrative within his images. I have been especially inspired by his picture The Bison, a photograph taken in India on a film that had been recovered from a sunken boat.

In early 1965, LIFE photographer Bill Ray spent several weeks with The Hells Angels. David Vintiner is a British portrait photographer living in London. These portraits are from a personal project, Enthusiasts, which was selected for the Creative Review Photography Annual last year. He writes: ‘My Enthusiasts were shot on location at a model railway exhibition in Birmingham, England. In my photography I’m drawn to the subtlety of the everyday, in this case, passion for a hobby’.

The neutrality of the background allows us to focus on the differences between an apparently similar group of sitters. I chose to shoot each of these portraits with available light to create an intimacy and subtlety which draws the viewer in to each character, encouraging them to observe the personal detail’. The Art of Self Portraits: Photo Booth Me was inspired by the works of photographer Kimiko Yoshida. Art by Davey began experimenting with Photo Booth software in 2010. For years he has been inspired by the ancient cultures of Africa and the Middle East, India and beyond. This ongoing project involves the use of makeup, fabric, lights, eyewear, and jewelry. He plans to produce an eBook of his collective work later this year.

Stephan Tillmans is a Berlin-based photographer. He writes: ‘The Luminant Point Arrays show cathode-ray-tube televisions being switched off. The television picture breaks down and creates a structure of light. The images open up a dialogue between the relationship of abstraction and concretion in photography as the breakdown of the television picture describes the breakdown of external reference. To label Phil Jackson’s work as ‘photography’ doesn’t really tell the whole story. Yeah sure, his photos are all thoughtfully-composed and very well shot. But I can’t help but pick up on a certain raw energy when I look through his portfolio. After spending a few minutes browsing his website, it became very clear to me that this is Jackson’s real life, and these pictures are a manifestation of his everyday experiences.

I recently came across the work of UK photographer Carl Beebee. He has just completed a series of work titled Lovers and Liars, which was created with 4mm figurines. The photographs are beautiful and are used as a tool to challenge your perceptions. His other work is equally as beautiful and ranges from unique portraits to crushed Coca Cola cans.

I love this school of photography. It references the old masters while simultaneously being completely modern. Ever since art students were introduced to Joel Peter Witkin, it became fashionable to at least play with this vein. However, most never give their work the personal touches to make it their own like Fredrik Odman does. Nor do they have the attention to detail or flawless craft to bring it to this level.

A favorite photostream of mine by American born, Seoul-based photographer Aaron Choe. On his Flickr homepage he writes: ‘I can’t always be sunny honey, but I’ll always make you smile”. Fun and playful street photography shot on film that will definitely put a smile on your face’.

Yola Monakhov’s project Empire Pictures weaves together images loosely connected to the Hudson River and her depictions of people leave me stunned. This photographer’s heightened interest in and sensitivity to the lives of others give her subjects dignity and importance. Strangers she has met in passing seem to be sharing openly with her camera what we are too shy to admit to ourselves. Somehow, they are as curious about her as she is about them.

Gerry Badger titled his collection of essays on photography after Lee Friedlander, who once said: ‘the pleasures of good photographs are the pleasures of good photographs’. With accessible and vivacious writing, Badger makes seemingly simple claims that quickly become layered and profound. He is open-minded yet opinionated, slightly cynical, and deeply, infectiously infatuated with the medium. Reading this book and sharing it with students is indeed a pleasure. It makes sense that Badger was the 2011 winner of the Infinity Award in Writing.

Jane Thomas lives in Largs, Scotland, where she photographs colors and patterns arising naturally from the interference of reflected light rays from the front and rear surface of a thin film of water and soap held in a tiny frame (a ‘bubble wand’). The inner circle that she uses for these photos measures 18mm, and some of the shots are of tiny areas within that ring.

Filip Dujardin is fine art and architectural photographer based in Belgium. Dujardin’s Fictions is a series of fictional structures created using a digital collaging technique from photographs of real buildings in and around Ghent, Belgium. Some of his architectural creations are structurally impossible or implausible. Some of the most intriguing buildings seem perfectly ordinary at first glance, revealing their fictional nature as the viewer registers missing or incongruous details.

At first glance, Thomas Barbey’s photos are awesome. But the fact that none of these shots have been photoshopped makes them mind-blowing.

I love this new book, Chicks with Guns, out by Lindsay McCrum. She photographed a compelling series of imagery of women with their guns.

Rania Matar is a wonderful photographer who is currently working on a project called A Girl and Her Room. She has photographed dozens of teenage girls from all different social backgrounds to make up this tremendous collection. The photographs are very cool and offer a concise document of the personal space, fashion and the culture of teenage girls. Matar also teaches documentary photography at the Massachusetts College of Art.
