After being locked up for 81 days in a secret location in China two years ago and not being able to reveal his work, Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei is back and this time he has gone big. Again. The Venice Art Biennale shows three large-scale works of the Chinese artist and activist: titled Bang, Straight and S.A.C.R.E.D. The works are a refurbishment of his days in detention, a kind of therapy or exorcism he had to do to get those endless days with nothing to do, sitting and waiting in a tiny room, out of his system.

The recent wrap of Sydney’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week was an obvious reason to celebrate. Our friends at Peroni partnered with Double Bay-based Pelicano to open a pop-up bar in the middle of the city’s CBD for four days over the event and closed the event with a party on the Friday evening.

It looked liked a little piece of Southern France had been dropped right in the midst of Friday’s rush hour. The unique concept gave Sydneysiders an opportunity to get out on the streets, support the fashion industry, and enjoy a cold one. The set up featured live entertainment from DJ’s Michael di Francesco (from well known group Van She), whilst a live catwalk show was broadcast from Carriageworks onto giant screens. The initiative was also linked with an online retailer, offering spectators the chance to comment on and purchase pieces from the livestream.

To address the problem of over 2 million merrymaking festival-goers peeing all about the place at Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, AfroReggae and JWT Brazil banded up to start an, er, Electric Pee project with urinals that double up as mini hydroelectric plants. Pee is converted into power as it trickles down turning gears that create electricity, and the large batteries are then collected by AfroReggae and loaded onto their truck to power its sound system to bring music to the street party. Who would have thought that peeing in the right places could get you more party music?

The Lost At E Minor team love a good old G&T at the end of a busy week, so when Hendricks invited us out in Sydney to celebrate our beloved beverage of choice we jumped at the chance. Little did we know that we were off to a curious and unusual night to discover the 11 different botanicals that make up Hendrick’s Gin. And what more appropriate a venue to venture into the Botanical Unknown than Sydney’s beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens.

The night treated us to the weird and wacky: venturing down a garden path lit only by candle light, we were greeted by a theatrical affair with ladies swooning in bath tubs, a Flowering Punch bubbling with dry ice and served in a signature Hendrick’s tea cup (so rad) and 1920s props a plenty for some playful fun. For Hendrick’s lovers such as us, this night set us on a path to the peculiar unknown – just as we like it.

There’s the Zombie Boot Camp, where you can learn how to shoot zombies down to death-after death; the Zombie Manor House crammed with hordes of zombies; and our favorite: Zombie Battle London featuring, erm, cockney zombies (that’s what they call ‘em).

Bands that will feature on the tour are five-piece London-based indie rock group Spector; London indie band, Theme Park; four piece psychedelic rock band, Splashh; and New Zealand musician, singer and producer, Willy Moon; with the details of the special London gig being kept secret for now.

Our friends at Ray-Ban are giving you the chance to win tickets to one of the five Envision Tour events by telling them what you always wanted to do with your life: ‘What is your vision?’. By uploading your vision to their website, you have a chance to make that dream come true and you can win tickets to one of the special events on the tour. If your ‘vision’ is selected as the ultimate winning entry, it will be brought to life with Ray-Ban’s help in September. Start now by uploading your vision to the Ray-Ban website.
Our friends at mobile innovation and design company HTC are ramping it up over the next few months , hosting a series of live music events in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to celebrate the launch of their new HTC One phone. And to make it all the more exciting, confirmed bands for the shows include Aussie upstarts, Birds of Tokyo and The Temper Trap.

But wait, there’s more: the Live@HTC campaign will also include additional concerts at venues across Australia which will be announced on their Facebook page each week. So check in for regular updates.

The HTC One is worth the fuss. It comes packed with its latest feature, HTC BoomSound, which immerses you in the music thanks to a dedicated amplifier and, for the first time on a smartphone, front facing speakers. It also enables you to detect the sounds around and automatically adjust to capture the clearest soundtrack. So if you want to record any of the Live@HTC performances in May, you’ll be well equipped. Huh, now there’s an idea! Right?

CONFIRMED Live@HTC SHOWS
The Temper Trap, Brisbane on May 6, 2013
Birds of Tokyo, Melbourne on May 22, 2013
Birds of Tokyo, Sydney on May 23, 2013

After a hard time working to earn their tickets, the Optus RockCorps volunteers were certainly an excitable bunch. Having to push my way through the packed out line of music lovers waiting to get in, I somehow found my way to the crew entrance and walked into the pavilion.

What I saw in front of me was amazing: dazzling lights, a shiny RockCorps sign and a throng of screaming fans running to the front; all to the tune of DJ duo The Faders. It seems everything was set for the night to be amazing.

First up was Australian legend Guy Sebastian. Taking to the stage with a simple acoustic guitar, Sebastian’s set soon exploded into an full band extravaganza including back up singers and a trumpeter as hits such as “Like It Like That” and “Get Along” crept into the set. Playing both guitar and piano and dancing along onstage, Sebastian revealed why 10 years after being a reality TV hopeful, he is now one of Australia’s biggest stars.

The set closed with the rap filled “Battle Scars,” which really got the crowd involved.

Next up was Australia’s very own party power-house The Potbelleez. Obviously they were up for a good time and so was the crowd because true magic happened as they bounced onstage.

Exercising an insane amount of energy and jumping all over the place, lead singer Ilan Kidron showed everyone how to party as the crowd really got wild. Closing number “Don’t Hold Back” was quiet a sight; 5000 volunteers letting their hair down after some good hard work.

British emcee Tinie Tempah soon appeared onstage to a pack of screaming fans and was for me one of the most impressing acts of the night. Jumping straight into the catchy rap sounds of “Frisky”, Tempah showcased a number of styles throughout his set and shook the backstage area with bass line after bass line.

The biggest act of the night was yet to come though – Irish pop-band The Script were the final act to take to the stage and definitely stole the limelight. Bursting onto stage, lead singer Danny O’Donoghue soon found himself down in the photographers pit interacting with the crowd; a truly wonderful experience for adoring fans. Trust me, the whole crowd was in love.

Give, get given. It was a simple concept but it sure delivered. Hopefully we’ll see further RockCorps projects like this in the near future.

A guy working as an immigration officer for Stansted Airport Border Force recently quit by handing in a cake that had a resignation note scribbled with what looked like chocolate frosting. The 10” x 12” passion cake (which is a spiced carrot cake with pecans, sultanas and coconut in it) is a fittingly elaborate farewell gift, considering that he’s leaving to set up his own cake business.

The Guardian reported that apparently no orders have rolled in yet for resignation cakes. Hey, only time will tell if this way of saying sweet goodbye to your job will become a trend.

It all started about a year ago when I wrote a post about Fumi Nakamura from New York here on Lost At E Minor. That started a correspondence between Fumi and I. We quickly agreed that it could be great to see if we could do a show together, either in Denmark or in the US. We have very different styles and techniques but we work with some of the same themes in our pieces.

We thought it could be a great challenge to combine our work in a two person show. Fumi showed my work to the gallery she is connected with in New York and they liked the idea. Last Wednesday was the opening of our show in Kunsthalle Galapagos. In between has been an enormous amount of emails, google chats, skype calls and three weeks where I have been in New York preparing the show. Now I am back in Copenhagen, after a successful opening. I love New York but after getting a glimpse of everyday life in the Big Apple I feel pretty privileged to live in Denmark.

Literary rock-star, Haruki Murakami, released his new book hours ago in a a midnight opening in Tokyo. Only printed in Japanese, the title translates roughly to “Colourless Tsukuru Tazaki and the Year of his Pilgrimage”. For the legions of Murakami devotees who failed to bone up on our Japanese prior to this release, we eagerly await translations in the near-distant future. Since this book falls about 700 pages short of his last release, Pulitizer Prize nominated, 1Q84, hopefully we won’t have to wait 2 years to get it outside of Japan.
