In the Victorian town of Torquay, there’s a few extra waves on the beach. Australian architect Tony Hobba has created a wave inspired structure out of recycled sheet metal and concrete that resembles an old, rusty surf shack. The Third Wave Kiosk, as it is formally known, is situated on top of a cliff and is fast becoming a big tourist attraction for the picturesque town. Who said building on a budget couldn’t be classy? Looking at the front of this Victorian terrace, many people would pass it by without a second thought. Being part of a conservation streetscape, not much could really be done to the facade. This, however, is completely untrue for the inside of the home, which has been dubbed Skylight House. Designed by firm Chenchow Little, the interior is minimalistic and uses concrete, glass and wood to effect.

The floor plan has been flipped around, moving the central living area to the top floor to allow for light and amazing views through the multitude of windows and skylights. Possibly my favourite part, though, is the mature banksia tree which stands in a central courtyard, tying nature to the house in a beautiful way. Toyo Ito is the mastermind behind the colossal, solar-powered World Games Stadium in Taiwan. Designed to hold 55,000 people, the structure is a true wonder of modern architecture. But this is nothing new fo Ito. He’s been pioneering the way for modern urban architecture since the 70s when he first combined the words “urban” and “robot” to brand his firm, Urbot. This 71-year-old Japanese architect just refuses to settle for tradition.

How would you like to work in a tree house that’s fully-equipped to survive a zombie apocalypse or nuclear attack? Well, for the lucky folks who work for Faceparty social networking in Britain, they get payed to hang out here (well, and work, of course). The company hired creative agency Helix 3D to make their slogan of ‘the biggest party on earth’ come to life. The result is this surrealist compound called Worship Street, which might just be the most unique work space we’ve ever seen.

The clever minds of Zo-loft design specialize in low-impact designs that maximize urban spaces and I think they really hit on a great idea here. This T3 tree chair would be perfect for a musician in a park or a parent watching their child at play. Or imagine stacking several on a tree to create a kind of tree fort.

This is a real life, fire-breathing dragon bridge. And you thought dragons weren’t real. This amazing, 666-meter long steel bridge was built in order to celebrate the 38th anniversary of the Vietnam War ending. It literally breathes fire and water out into the air. The Capo Hotel blends old world Italian charm with the modern flash of glass and polished metals. The hotel, situated in Shanghai, was voted Best Restauarant 2013 by the China Tatler. And no wonder! Fresh, oven baked pizzas and scrumptious cocktails are readily available to enjoy in this super cool atmosphere. I love the strange classical art found throughout.

I feel a bit like Alice walking into Wonderland. This new retail space all glass, huge sculpture, and black and white floors. Designed by Italian architect Fabio Novembre, Hit Gallery in Hong Kong brings the retail experience to a new realm of surrealism. The shop is meant to communicate the Italian fashion and lifestyle. This design elevates shopping to the level of gallery going. Very chic.

I love this super modern apartment building in Antwerp. Known as Woning Moereels, the building was converted from an outdated water tower by the Belgian architect, Jo Crepain. The structure is semi-translucent and literally glows. The building is like a monumental lantern to the rest of the landscape. I would love to live in something like this.

If you’re looking to get high on alcohol and altitudes alike, the 122th-storey high restaurant-bar At.mosphere in Burj Khalifa, Dubai is your best bet. Naturally, they also serve high tea (but of course).

Needless to say, the fact that At.mosphere is situated just two floors below the observatory deck of the world’s tallest building means you get to enjoy an unparalleled view at downtown Dubai. Though even Adam Tihany, who designed the interiors, admits: “After five times, you feel a bit dizzy. You only want to come up twice.”

If someone had told us ten years ago that they could freeze a wave, we would have laughed them off. Okay, we stopped laughing. Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Hotel, which looks like a breaking wave that has stopped in its tracks — yes, all 26 levels of it — comes close.

The exteriors are crafted with aluminum and blue-plated glass. Wonder if the brave window cleaners who maintain the building ever fantasize about surfing during work hours.

The inspiration may be water, but the Roca London Gallery designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, with its minimalistic undulating contoured walls and neutral, monochromatic hues, is so other-worldly that it calls to mind a spaceship instead. Even the tiles have wavy edges. Most of the galley’s furniture, from the reception desk to shelves, are made of glass-reinforced plastics.

Dutch fashionhouse Viktor & Rolf’s neoclassical store in Milan is decadently elegant and all, but there’s something not quite right about it. For one, these chandeliers are sticking out of the ground. Nope, the designers weren’t drunk. The inverted decor was exactly what architect Siebe Tettero had in mind when they approached him to “twist the classic”. Now we’re the ones who could use that drink. Bottoms up.

In New Zealand’s Christchurch Botanic Gardens, Mexican artist Héctor Zamora, who is based in Sao Paolo, has stacked metallic boxy structures above Kiosk Lake for an installation work called Muegano. He said the idea came from reflecting about the symbolic house shape and seeing how it didn’t look like a natural organic construction.

Blame us for watching too many samurai films, but the idea of taking a dip in a scarlet-red swimming pool makes us excited. At The Library, a beach-facing boutique hotel in Koh Samui owned by Kasemtham Sornsong and designed by Tirawan Songsawat, you actually can. And it’s not like you’re going to find yourself in a bloody mess when you get out of the pool — it’s the red tiles that make it look bloody.

This church by architect Gijs Van Vaerenbergh appears to be completely transparent. When the light hits it at just the right angel, the Belgian church  seems to be glowing and completely other-worldly. It is constructed using  over 30 tons of steel and 2000 columns, meaning that contrary to it’s appearance, the structure is extremely solid. The illusion is incredible. I can’t help but feel at peace and almost sad for the disappearing church.
