In this year’s Super Bowl, an unlikely character made an appearance in the half-time show.
SpongeBob and his gang were given a brief cameo on the show between the performances of Maroon 5 and Travis Scott.
Fans of the much-loved animation created a petition for the NFL to include a performance of ‘Sweet Victory’, a song which was performed on SpongeBob SquarePants in their own version of a Superbowl, as a tribute to Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob, who passed away last year.
This petition amassed over a million signatures which caught the attention of the NFL.
Maroon 5 teased the Super Bowl in a post a few days earlier, which included a short clip of SpongeBob, and had many fans convinced that Maroon 5 would be performing the tune.
Whilst the fans got the SpongeBob SquarePants cameo, they did not receive the song that they petitioned for and many have gone online to express their disappointment.
