Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh lived up to their definitely real reputations for being the most badass pair in Hollywood, with a series of brutal takedowns at the 2019 Golden Globes.
After poking fun at Kevin Hart’s bizarre will-he-or-won’t-he journey with the Oscars hosting job following the discovery of his homophobic tweets from several years ago, Samberg and Oh turned their attention to following in the footsteps of Ricky Gervais.
The British comedian’s stint, having hosted the Globes four times between 2010 and 2016, was particularly known for his roasting of high-profile celebrities such as Johnny Depp – although in that particular case, it was before that became the objectively right thing to do.
Samberg and Oh took the mickey out of Gervais’ hosting style, savagely destroying stars such as Michael B. Jordan, Amy Adams, Spike Lee and Bradley Cooper – by heaping compliment after compliment on them. That’ll teach ’em.
Though much of the pair’s opening to the ceremony was tongue-in-cheek, Oh would finish it off with some heartwarming words about the changes to the representation of women and minorities that have begun to occur in the entertainment industry.
“I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight because I wanted to be here, to look out into this audience and witness this moment of change,” Oh said.
“I see you – all of these faces of change. And now, so will everyone else.”
