The most breathtaking snaps from the Sydney Storms

As thunder boomed and rain poured around Sydney on Wednesday, it didn’t take long for social media to become flooded with awesome pictures of the storm.

By 8:30am, when most Sydneysiders are usually picking up their almond milk lattes on their way to work, more than 111 mm of rain had already fallen in Mosman – including 61 mm in half an hour.

Needless to say, conditions were pretty wet ‘n’ wild across the city. Streets flooded, planes grounded, Lewisham train station filled up like a bath, and office windows in Chatswood were blown out by 70 kph winds.

The silver lining to this cloud? People were out and about to snap some amazing shots of the storm and its after-effects. Here are some of the best, led by Manly ferry deckhand Haig Gilchrist:

Lots of rain today! It’s dark and ugly out there but it would sure be a pleasant site for our farmers 😀#sydneystorm

⛈💦☔️It’s been a wet and wild day in Sydney with the worst November rains in 30 years drenching the city. And it’s not over yet – stay safe, the commute is going to be hectic! 📷 @jag2101 & @dylrobinson #sydney #sydneystorm #sydneyweather #sydneyaustralia #sydneylocal #wetnwild #rain #commuterlife #sydneyphotographer #dailytelegraph #australiagram #thedailytelegraph

So… this was my car this morning! This is what we woke up to!! Car is DEAD! I walked through the flood waters and tried to turn it on! Didn’t work! Some amazing people showed up and helped me push it out of there! So much water. All my things floating 🙁 Im thinking about all the people living on the street, hope they have somewhere dry to stay until this crazy weather stops! 🙁

On my bread run this morning I watched this wheelie bin sail majestically the wrong way down Chalmers St, no respect for traffic rules. Sadly I wasn’t quick enough on my phone to capture the whole journey. Last I saw it it was heading east on Redfern St in quite a rush. #wheelie #wearesailing #sydneystorm

Let’s hope that as summer progresses we can switch the gumboots for the good ol’ Aussie staple – a pair of thongs.
