A billboard of A Star Is Born, the new film starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, has been turned into a sign of support for the LGBTQI+ community.
The musical romantic drama centres around a love story between a superstar country singer and the shy, talented woman that he discovers.
With the original film debuting in 1937 and remakes appearing in 1954, 1976, and 2013, the story is almost as old as Hollywood itself. But the latest version, perhaps unwittingly, has projected a whole new meaning.
At one point in the film, Lady Gaga’s character, Ally, hits the big time and features on a billboard in Los Angeles. The billboard shows a picture of her with ‘Ally’ emblazoned across the bottom.
In the LGBTQI+ (gosh that takes some typing) community, the term ‘ally’ refers to a straight person who stands in solidarity with the gay and queer community.
As is the nature of the internet, it was only a matter of hours before members of the LGBTQI+ community noticed the subversive meaning of the billboard. Overnight, Twitter was flooded with hilarious tributes to ally-related activities.

Was it just a happy coincidence? As someone with a cultural studies background, it’s hard for me to believe so. Every single element is under the control of someone – a director, a cinematographer, a production designer.
Not many things make it into the final cut of the film that haven’t already been approved hundreds of times. I think that it’s safe to say that Bradley Cooper, the director of A Star is Born, is the real ally here.
