Aussie pop trio Glades finally release their much-awaited debut album, ‘To Love You’

The release follows two years of unprecedented success for the Sydney electronic-pop trio.

Glades – comprised of Karina Wykes, Cameron Robertson, and Joseph Wenceslao – have released their long-awaited debut album, entitled To Love You.

Having caught everyone’s attention two years ago with their single Speechless, the band has dropped hit after hit, with singles like Do Right and Not About You. They’ve also received over 150 million global streams, as well as having toured with the likes of LANY and Clean Bandit.

Now, their album promises to take them to the next level. It features Eyes Wide Shut, an uplifting yet bittersweet dance track that’s about finding the strength to move on from a bad relationship.

Made in collaboration with Australian filmmaker Grey Ghost, the track’s moody black and white video was shot in LA and is the trio’s first official music video.

On the forthcoming album, the group told Lost At E Minor: “Hollywood tends to portray love in one dimension, as a picture-perfect romantic love. But there’s so much more to love than that, and it doesn’t have to be romantic. We hope that by listening to the album you can hear the other ways that we know love shows up in the world.”

Glades will also be going on a national tour later this month and in December. They’ll hit up Melbourne first on November 24, with stops in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, and Brisbane.

We recently caught up with Glades to know more about their new single and album. Take a look:

How would you describe your new single Eyes Wide Shut? And what was the inspiration behind it?

Eyes Wide Shut is about being in a relationship with someone who’s hurting you and refuses to change. Time and time again you’ve tried to fix the situation but it’s almost as if they don’t realise how much they’re hurting you. It’s about having the self-respect to realise that you deserve better and distance yourself from a bad relationship.”

Eyes Wide Shut also happens to be your first official music video. Could you tell us more about it? About how it all came together?

“We brainstormed a whole heap of ideas amongst ourselves, and brought it to the director of the music video, Jeremy Koren who helped us pick the realistic ideas and helped us figure out how to achieve them. We dream really big. Haha.

“We’ve never done a video to this scale before – we walked into this big studio and there were around 10 people on set. We used crazy lighting, wind machines, and even snow machines in the video!”

Please briefly take us through the creative process behind your debut album, To Love You.

“We typically start each song by making a beat, putting chords to the beat, and then putting melodies and lyrics to that. Each song was different though – for example with Nervous Energy we started with guitars. With Through To You it started from the lyrics. We wrote about 60 songs before we finally decided on the 11 that made the album.”

Is there an overarching theme or message that the album is trying to tell its listeners?

“Hollywood tends to portray love in one dimension, as a picture-perfect romantic love. But there’s so much more to love than that, and it doesn’t have to be romantic. We hope that by listening to the album you can hear the other ways that we know love shows up in the world.”

And lastly, what should your fans expect in your upcoming tour?

“We’re bringing screens and introducing visuals on this tour, which we haven’t done on a headline tour before. We’re going to have some moments too that hopefully we’ll all be able to remember! We want our live show to be an experience, not just a live play through of the album.”
