Japanese artist explores the human psyche with surreal paintings (NSFW)

Los Angeles-based, Japanese-born artist Chie Yoshii is set to debut a new solo show that reflects on psychology, mythology, and dreams.

The show, aptly entitled 夢 (DREAMS), will feature 11 new oil paintings and three drawings on paper in Yoshii’s surreal female figurative style. With lifelike compositions inspired by mythological figures and traditional Flemish paintings, each piece will represent a dream that hopefully will resonate with viewers.

“Much of her work is inspired by the relationship between human psychology and mythical archetypes,” a press release reads. “The enduring themes are woven into surrealities filled with symbols and visual narratives.

“The enigmatic images embody contradicting elements such as novelty and nostalgia, innocence and sensuality, and strength and fragility, mirroring the complexity of our psyche.”

We recently caught up with Yoshii to know more about her and her work. Take a look:

Please tell us a bit more about your background. What path led you to becoming an artist, and to doing what you’re doing today?

“I took evening classes from various art institutions until I met Adrian Gottlieb, with whom I studied for six years before exploring my own style.”

How would you describe your work? And how did you develop your own personal style?

“I try to achieve an eternal moment of beauty that has tactile presence. I followed what attracts me visually and conceptually to arrive in this style.”

Where or who do you draw inspiration from?

“My paintings are not about reality, but about the fantasies aroused by its effects. They are viscerally conceived and more tangible than reality.”

You were born in Japan but much of your career has been spent in the US. How has the cultural shift influenced your art?

“Being away from Japan enabled me to create the world of my own in which various cultural references and characters peacefully co-exist.”

Please briefly take us through your creative process. How long does it usually take to finish a piece? What goes on in your mind as you’re creating?

“The process is very organic. Images float up in my mind. While working, the images get clearer. The concept comes later, sometimes at the very end.”

What should attendees expect from your upcoming solo show later this month?

“In dreams, we see archaic images that emerge from the depth of the mind. I tried to capture these themes resonate with us beyond time and place.”

Chie Yoshii’s 夢 (DREAMS) will open Saturday, October 20 at the Corey Helford Gallery in LA, and will run until November 24. You can head on over here to learn more.
