In the Amazon, a ‘helicopter bug’ that looks like a Pokemon

Who’s that Pokemon??

In the Amazon rainforest, there’s a species of treehopper that has a bizarre body part that looks like the rotors of a helicopter.

Not much is known about treehoppers, especially this particular subfamily. What is known, though, is that they are related to cicadas and leafhoppers, and that they have ornate pronotum, which resemble horns (or helicopter rotors) to aid in camouflage.

The insects also like to feed on sap plant, and not humans, so you can relax now.

There are about 3,200 species of treehopper in over 400 genera. They are found in every continent except Antarctica. And if the makers of Pokemon are reading this, maybe treehoppers will appear in regions like Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn soon.

A very cute buffalo treehopper (Stictocephala bisonia), one of a lot I found amongst the brambles in a hedgerow in the Alsace. Although native to North America it is now widespread throughout southern Europe #treehopper #buffalotreehopper #Stictocephalabisonia #invertebrate #bug #insect #cute #hedgerow #brambles #alsace #france #forgottenlittlecreatures #wildplanet #EarthCapture @bbcearth

Tag #insectguru for a chance to be featured. • This is a very peculiar planthopper by the name of #cladonota#apicalis from the Family #membracidae .The species are very ornamented and have strange body forms, sometimes resembling pieces of branches, leaves, dry fruits or seeds, lichens, bird droppings, etc. There are about 50 described species. Their biology is poorly known. They are masters of mimicry and they blew my mind when I saw them. • #treehopper #today #insectfact #thursday #week #weekend #species #arthropods #fact #facts #insect #insects #insectsofinstagram #nature #natureonly #natureisawesome #insectphoto #natureaddict #natgeo #naturephotograph#naturelovers #macro #macros
