Only five months since we were treated to our first look at Bohemian Rhapsody — a Freddie Mercury film biopic — a new dreamy trailer promises to bring the life of fellow rock god Elton John to the big screen.
The film, titled Rocketman, will see Taron Egerton play the English megastar. If the pipes he shows in the film’s trailer are anything to go by, he’s going to do a fair job too.
Egerton rose to fame with the 2014 sleeper-hit Kingsman: The Secret Service, and actually acted alongside Sir. Elton himself in the film’s sequel. He has also worked with Rocketman‘s director Dexter Fletcher before, in the feel-good sports drama, Eddie the Eagle.
Seeing that the 28-year-old Egerton is about to play Elton John, we can probably expect a retirement announcement shortly after the film’s debut — I mean, does it get any bigger?
The film will follow young Elton through his years as a rising star at the Royal Academy of Music and his partnership with long-time collaborator and lyricist, Bernie Taupin.
Bryce Dallas Howard of Jurassic World fame will star as Elton John’s mother, Sheila, and Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden will play his manager, John Reid.
You would be excused for thinking that the trailer is reminiscent of what we saw in Bohemian Rhapsody. There’s all the beautiful women, crazy outfits, and spectacular live shows that come with a musical biopic.
However, it appears that Rocketman will be a far more surreal affair. The fabulous, fabric-heavy teaser features a sequence where Elton and his audience levitate, so it’s safe to assume that the film will deliver on its promise to be “a true fantasy.”
Elton John has always been larger than life, so what’s more fitting than a film about him that is too?
