Rejoice, humans! The greatest movie ever made is now available on Youtube in full HD for the whole world to watch for free. LEGALLY.
History books, critics, audiences and film buffs have all been painfully wrong for decades.
No, the best movie of all time is not Citizen Kane and it’s not Casablanca. It’s not Schindler’s List, or Blade Runner either.
The pinnacle of cinema is a small independent film from 2003 that only cost US $6 million to make, and legend has it, raked the mind-blowing sum of $US 1,900 at the box office.
You know what we’re talking about. It’s The Room, written, directed, produced by and starring the one and only, Tommy Wiseau. It’s a film that defies logic — it’s simultaneously unbearably bad, but also, so, so good.
“It is one of the most important films of the past decade,” said Ross Morin, assistant professor of film studies at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. “It exposes the fabricated nature of Hollywood. The Room is the Citizen Kane of bad movies.”
The film’s beyond terrible acting, ultra cheesy dialogue and hilarious sex scenes inspire a strange fascination. Fans all over the world flood social media with recreations of its most cringe-worth scenes, and the infamous line “you are tearing me apart, Lisa!” has become one of the internet’s most popular memes.
The story behind this inept production was told by Wiseau’s co-star and partner in crime Greg Sestero in a 2013 non-fiction book titled “The Disaster Artist”. The book later became the basis for the 2017 film of the same name, directed, produced and starring James Franco.
Now, in typical mysterious fashion, Wiseau himself has uploaded The Room in its entirety to Youtube. The cult favourite was posted last Friday and has already raked in more than 320,000 views and has over 2,000 comments from adoring fans.
The film was posted on Wiseau’s own channel and is simply labelled with “The Room Press Screener”. We don’t suppose this is a mistake?
If you haven’t seen this masterpiece yet, this is the perfect excuse to invite some friends over, buy tons of beer, pizza, and be prepared to have a mystical experience.
*It appears that Wiseau’s uploading of the film was indeed a mistake. It has been taken down from Youtube. Sorry folks, if you want to watch it, you’ll have to order the film from Tommy’s wacky online store.*
