Pussy Riot’s Pyotr Verzilov is in critical condition following possible poisoning

Late on September 11th, Pyotr Verzilov, member of activist group Pussy Riot, was hospitalised with suspected poisoning.

Speaking to Meduza, Pyotr’s wife, Veronika Nikulshina, said her husband had gone to rest at six in the evening, feeling under the weather. But two hours later, his condition had worsened dramatically.

“Between eight and ten, his condition got exponentially worse. First it was his vision, then his ability to speak, and then his ability to walk.

“When the paramedics arrived, he answered all their questions, saying, ‘No, I didn’t eat anything. No, I didn’t take anything.’ He was getting worse even faster, and then he started convulsing. On the way [to the hospital], in the ambulance, he was already babbling.

“He fell into such a half-asleep, half-unconscious state that he stopped responding to me and didn’t even recognize me anymore.”

Initially, doctors didn’t believe there was any obvious cause. However, according to Nikulshina, at approximately eleven o’clock Verzilov was moved to the hospital’s toxicology unit.

Pussy Riot is a feminist punk rock group who came to international attention when two of its members were arrested for hooliganism after starting a protest performance inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior in 2012.

Whilst Verzilov was not a member of the band itself, his ex-wife, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova was one of those incarcerated following the 2012 performance and Verzilov himself garnered attention after announcing he was the “producer” of the band.
