Student blames autocorrect for racist text to future black roommate

What a way to make a lasting first impression.

Courtney Schaefer, a white student at Georgia Southern University, has received fierce backlash after accidentally sending a text with the word “niggerish” to her future roommate, who is black, then tried to cover it up by blaming autocorrect.

Screenshots of the text conversation show Schaefer and her roommate making introductions when the former says, “Her insta looks pretty normal not too niggerish,” suggesting she was trying to text someone else about the roommate’s Instagram account.

After realising what she did, Schaefer pinned the blame on autocorrect.

“Damn spell check I did NOT mean to say that. I was texting Hannah and I meant to say triggerish meaning that you seemed really cool nothing that triggered a red flag!”

The black student then posted the screenshots on social media, where people have been up in arms over the racist slur.

“Triggerish is not a word at all either,” said Dajah Morrison, a friend of the victim. “The closest word to that is triggerfish. So for her to cover those things up, it just didn’t add up.”

Schaefer has since deleted all her social media accounts.

The university, meanwhile, released a statement on Friday, saying: “The University shares the hurt our community has expressed following the use of a racial slur exhibited in a screenshot shared on social media. The use of such racist comments is offensive and unacceptable and in no way reflects the attitudes or values of Georgia Southern University.”

It’s unknown, though, if the white student will face any disciplinary action.

As for the rest of the student body, they say they’re shocked but not entirely surprised by the racist text.

“I think I speak for the entire African-American population of Georgia Southern when I say that while I am not surprised, I am angry and disappointed,” said senior Leon Bowles. “The text itself was cause enough for outrage, but the pathetic attempt at an excuse and apology, was a flippant insult to her intelligence.”
