Meet Ovie, a smart tag to help eliminate your personal food waste

This new product from Chicago-based start-up Ovie will help you keep track of what’s in your fridge.

And when to eat it.

The idea is to eliminate food waste, help you save money on food and to avoid finding months-old spaghetti in the dark corners of your cold-box.

The product is straightforward – a smart tag that is placed on your food or containers, or a smart container with a tag already built in. Press the button on the tag, tell Alexa what food you’re saving and then Ovie takes care of the rest.

But how does it work?

Well, Alexa tells Ovie’s cloud and they pull information from their database about how long your food should last.

The tag will change colour depending on the state of your chosen food – blue for ‘freshly tagged’, yellow for ‘still great but don’t wait’, and red for ‘too late’.

If you don’t have Alexa or Google Home, you can also use the product by typing what you’re saving directly into the app. The creators say:

“Your life is busy. Tech should give time and peace of mind back to you and it should be easy to use, otherwise, what’s the point?”

The app also allows you to search for foods that you’re craving. The app will filter results from outside recipe databases and list options based around the foods in your fridge – starting with those with a yellow light.

As someone who is incapable of experimenting in the kitchen (especially with the leftover bits and pieces), this is very appealing.

The products are now available for pre-order from their Kickstarter site, to be released in January 2019.
