Starbucks “sorry” after two black men were arrested in-store for no reason

Sometimes sorry just isn’t good enough.

Which is exactly what Starbucks has found out, after two black men were arrested in a Philadelphia Starbucks whilst waiting for their friend.

The incident was captured on video by another customer, who posted it on Twitter in a tweet which has since gone viral and received monumental backlash at the actions of the staff.

Richard Ross, Philadelphia Police Commissioner, defended the actions of his officers, who have a “legal obligation” to carry out their duties if a business calls and requests for customers to be removed.

The phone call to the police department was prompted because the two men had refused to leave the store when asked, because they were waiting for a friend.

A friend who later turned up and found his companions had been arrested.

Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson released a statement named “Reheprensible outcome in Philadelphia incident” in which he condemned the actions taken and described the video as “very hard to watch”.

“I’m writing this evening to convey three things:

“First, to once again express our deepest apologies to the two men who were arrested with a goal of doing whatever we can to make things right.

“Second, to let you know of our plans to investigate the pertinent facts and make any necessary changes to our practices that would help prevent such an occurrence from ever happening again.

“And third, to reassure you that Starbucks stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling.”

The store in Philadelphia has been subjected to protesters and there have been calls for a boycott of the coffee shop giant.

Mr Johnson insisted the company “will learn from this and be better”.

We certainly hope so.
