Australia just had its first mullet festival, and it was amazing

Can mullets ever make a comeback? Probably not. However, if you ask any resident of Kurri Kurri, Australia, mullets never went away to begin with!

The town has long believed that the audacious hairdo originated in their area, and to celebrate this, they held Australia’s first ever mullet festival. Called Mullet Fest 2018, the event featured over 150 mullet-owners competing against each other at the Chelmsford Hotel.

The competition had five ‘best mullet’ categories, namely: male, female, grubby, redhead, and best of the best.

Shane Hanrahan, whose waist-length mullet hasn’t been cut since 1986, recalled the feeling of winning the ‘best of the best’ category award.

“This is the first trophy I’ve ever had,” he said. “I can’t believe it.”

According to event host and local hairdresser Laura Hawkins, the festival was organised six months ago to celebrate the town’s connection with the hairstyle.

“The mullet scene is very strong here,” she said.
