Meet the artist who advocates sex positivity through NSFW tattoos

Portland-based tattooist Brittny Abad encourages her clients to explore and embrace their sexuality through erotic body art.

The 24-year-old artist, originally from California, creates designs that often focus on the female form. For instance, two mermaids locked in a passionate embrace as they share a kiss.

Both surreal and titillating, her tattoos are a reflection and expression of her feelings of “lust, love, and loneliness.”

Speaking with Konbini, Abad explained how she is unashamed of her obsession with love, and why she is trying to take down the taboos surrounding sexuality.

“Sex is awesome; all it takes is a mutual attraction and some body parts. We all love it but nobody wants to talk about it – let alone, see it. I think it’s negligent to pass off that part of our lives as unimportant and unworthy for the public forum.”

For those enamored by Abad’s work but would like something more SFW, you’ll be glad to know that she also makes other designs that also carry the same themes of sex- and body- positivity.

“If there’s anything I hope people take away from my work, it’s to let go of their inhibitions and allow themselves to be happy – explore things that others may view as taboo or inappropriate, because in the end, their opinions don’t matter.

“My art and essentially my life would never would have become what it is now if I hadn’t let that happen for myself. There is nothing more important. Life is too short to give a fuck about things that don’t make you feel good. So find whatever it is you like and go enjoy it to pieces!”

We were lucky enough to get a hold of Abad for a quick interview despite her busy schedule. Below, she talks more about herself and her work. Take a look:

How did you become a tattoo artist? What influenced you to pursue this career path?

“I learned to tattoo in Portland after moving and making friends in the tattoo industry. I was encouraged to pursue my art and decided to quit my job and get into tattooing.”

How would you describe your style?

“I enjoy very simple, punchy, provocative and strange designs work. My favorite style to tattoo in is bold and simple.”

Take us through your creative process. How do you come up with a design for your client? Where do you draw inspiration?

“I draw inspiration from the client as well as music I listen to. I’m also heavily influenced by 80’s and 90’s fashion culture.”

Do you have a favourite design?

“I don’t have any favorite designs but my favorite themes are erotic/erotica, and feminine figure and portrait drawing.”

What would be your dream creative project?

“I would love to learn to sculpt a female figure out of marble.”

Lastly, as a sexuality advocate, what’s the best sexuality advice you could give?

“Pursue the sexual life that makes you happy regardless of what the world around you may think! It is so important.”
