As it appears, John Mayer isn’t only a talented musician, he’s also a great cosplayer – a Star Wars cosplayer, to be exact.
The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter has helped spark 2018’s first trend after he posted a half-naked selfie of himself wearing only high-waisted trousers. He captioned it: #KyloRenChallenge.
The challenge, of course, refers to that hilarious scene in Star Wars: The Last Jedi wherein Kylo and Rey are ‘Force-Skyping’, and the villain is seen topless – as if he’d just come out of the shower.

Now thanks to Mayer, everyone is getting in on the act.
Rip 2017. Overall I've had a very good year. Spent the year with the most amazing girl in the world, made new friends, and had a great time with all my friends I already had. I've grown as a person, developed new interests, and all around had a good time. Not sure what the future holds, but hopefully it will be bright. #happynewyear #2k18 #kylorenchallenge
Whilst Mayer can be credited with helping popularise the trend, the first #KyloRenChallenge post online appeared to come from Instagram user @lazar0d1az.
If you’re wondering why director Rian Johnson went with the creative decision to show partial nudity in a film franchise that rarely shows any skin (with the exception of Princess Leia in her gold bikini), he did so to give the audience a visual cue.
“That was important to establish what she was actually seeing,” said co-sound supervisors Matthew Wood and Ren Klyce.
“Was she hearing his voice or seeing his face or just his eyes? And so that [shirtless] scene is to inform the audience: ‘Oh, she can see his body.’ It’s also good humour.”
