After a young British couple visited the Greek island of Rhodes for the wedding ceremony of their dreams, Greek authorities have banned foreigners from marrying on the island.
The Birmingham couple booked the idyllic location of the monastery of Saint Paul on Rhodes for a picture-perfect wedding.
To celebrate the once-in-a lifetime occasion, the couple decided to spice up affairs with a bit of cheeky humour. They staged a hilariously trashy pic in which the bride, white wedding dress and all, is kneeling in front of her husband pretending to give him oral sex with the majestic monastery as backdrop. He is, of course, raising a celebratory fist in the air.
When they posted the photo on Facebook, little did they know it would turn into a viral sensation – for all the wrong reasons.
It turns out the bishop of this conservative island thought the couple’s antics were something close to profanity and decided to ban all foreign weddings in the island to avoid it happening again.
“We are Greek and we cherish our traditions and the sanctity of our religious sites,” community leader Giorgos Eleftheriou said. “We cannot allow this disgusting behaviour to prevail.”
Mr. Eleftheriou, who also performed the couple’s ceremony, added, “I have hundreds of soon-to-be brides from Britain and all over the world calling me today in tears because of this decision. It’s a huge damper on our society here. We are one of the most famous wedding destinations in the world and we are booked solid through to 2021.”
Hundreds of British couples have vented their fury at the Birmingham couple following the news of the ban.
