While planning a six-month trip to New Zealand, or should I say, Middle Earth, photographer Akhil Suhas had a great idea: Why not get Gandalf as his tour guide?
In his series, entitled #GandalfTheGuide, Suhas brought along a Gandalf costume on his 9,000 mile adventure, making it seem like the grey wizard was with him on his journey through New Zealand’s stunning landscapes.
“I wanted a recurring subject in my photos and with so many photographers visiting the country, I figured that I needed to do something to set me apart!” he told Peta Pixel.
“I was watching the LOTR for the 5th time when I figured New Zealand is famous for 2 things: its landscapes and the LOTR + Hobbit Trilogies. So why not combine the two by having Gandalf in the landscapes?”
Initially, Suhas planned to take portraits, but found it difficult (after all, it’s not easy being a wizard).
“I tried the camera on a tripod with a timer shot, didn’t work for me,” he said. “So, I started asking the people I met along the way if they wanted to put on the outfit.”
And because it’s hard to pass up the chance to become Gandalf, people obliged! The resulting photographs are nothing short of epic.
witnessing the turquoise water at hokitika gorge with #GandalfTheGuide has definitely been a highlight of our journey through middle-earth. a little while ago, @purenewzealand featured some snippets of my journey with gandalf on their facebook page, to celebrate the 15 year anniversary of ?? being home to middle-earth. I tried linking it in my bio, but it wouldn't work – so head over to their facebook to see the photos (including some exclusive shots that I haven't posted here)
his camouflage game is on point #GandalfTheGuide It's been almost 4 months since we set foot on the South Island and said our farewells yesterday, the landscapes have been nothing short of epic but it's the people I've met along the way helped make this journey so memorable! Also, thank you all for following this journey, I'm on the home stretch of finishing this epic adventure! ?
looks like #GandalfTheGuide is blending in with the surroundings. I went on a lovely mission to the Rob Roy Glacier with some fellow instagrammers @ellenprojects, @adaptography, @time_to_film, and @dubdof. I love the community aspect of instagram cos you get to meet and hangout with other photographers! In other news, I hope everyone is safe from the recent earthquake here in nz – while camping, I thought the wind was shaking my car – but, when I read the news this morning – turns out it was actually an earthquake! @lakewanakanz @purenewzealand
hikes that leave you speechless (and breathless) with #GandalfTheGuide ? The last couple of days have been a bit overwhelming with all the article features and messages I've received from all over the ?, I really appreciate it. Also, thank you to all the new and old followers who helped me reach 10k, a huge milestone for me! While my cross country road trip might be over, it doesn't mean that there won't be more adventures, so stay tuned ?
A trip across middle earth is incomplete without visiting mordor (or what's left of it). Over the last 7 weeks, I covered a little over 5500 kms across the north island with #GandalfTheGuide. Now we're on the ferry, making our way to the south island. Really excitied to visit my bucket list locations instead of drooling over their pictures on instagram!
even after all the time that #GandalfTheGuide has spent in middle earth, the views are still capable of rendering him (and me) speechless ?‼️ p.s. – I got a message asking, "how badly is ?? affected by the earthquake cos I have a cousin planning to visit in dec?" and I said it's #SafeToVisitNZ cos it's #AsBeautifulAsEver ? @lakewanakanz @purenewzealand
P.S. Suhas, thankfully, did not encounter any orcs along the way. You could see more of his photography on Instagram.
