Artist arranges 20,000 seeds to make a massive realistic portrait

Continuing her work with unconventional materials, artist Red Hong Yi has created a giant portrait of Ai WeiWei using seeds – about 20,000 of them.

The portrait, entitled 20,000 seeds, was inspired by WeiWei’s quote about the items, saying “the seed is a household object but at the same time it is a revolutionary symbol.”

Red spent hours arranging and rearranging the sunflower seeds on a massive canvas to get the famous Chinese artist and activist’s features just right.

According to her, creating an image of someone who has always challenged political systems has helped her cope with the turmoil of current events.

“In light of all the political absurdity going on in the world, I created this piece for my sanity,” she told My Modern Met. “This piece encourages people to have the bravery and courage to think and see clearly, and to protect freedom of expression.”
