As you may well know, Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher passed away earlier today – leaving behind an incredible body of work.
Fisher’s audition as Princess Leia for Star Wars: A New Hope is everything you hope it will be.
At just 19-years-old, she poignantly brings life to Lucas’ script and showed powerful chemistry with her on-screen (and off-screen) partner, Harrison Ford.
The reading is done with Ford out of camera shot (it’s clearly his voice, though) and follows Leia as she explains to Solo,
‘I know they’ll follow us. And they’ll bring the Death Star. But our only hope is to destroy it before it destroys us.’
From these very early stages, Fisher was clearly able to convey the complex mix of courage, knowledge and insecurity in her character, and it is utterly fascinating to watch:
