Mojang, the Swedish video game developer behind Minecraft, has announced the series will have a spinoff in the form of a novel, called Minecraft: The Island.
The book will feature a story that involves “a hero stranded in an unfamiliar land, with unfamiliar rules, learning to survive against tremendous odds.” So basically, it’s Robinson Crusoe but with creepers.
The company has tapped Max Brooks, the author of best-selling books The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z, to pen the novel. According to Lydia Winters, Brand Director of Mojang, Brooks was a no-brainer for the position.
“His enthusiasm and understanding of all things related to the game bring out the sense of wonder and possibility that so many players love about Minecraft – ourselves included,” she said.
Brooks, meanwhile, added that he can’t wait to start writing. “I’m very excited to be part of this new venture,” he said. “Finally, I can justify all those hours I’ve spent playing Minecraft.”
