We interviewed the artist who shut down sexists with their own comments

California-based artist Rora Blue puts sexists to shame by turning their rude, unwarranted comments into art.

Her series – entitled Handle With Care – calls out sexism by depicting lines she or other women have received in the context they’re in. For example, one photo shows alphabet soup spelling out the comment, “You’re a woman, you belong in the kitchen.”

The project has become a platform for her followers to express their experiences. Rora’s Instagram comments section reveals just some of the horrible stuff women have been told.

One read, “You were drunk, what did you expect?” while another said, “You must have made him think you wanted it.”

We recently interviewed Rora to find out more about her thought-provoking series.

What made you decide to do Handle With Care?

“My series Handle With Care started as a response to a women’s studies class that I was taking. I felt inspired to speak up about the sexism that I have experienced in my own life and to use art as a medium to do that. I also wanted to connect with other women and encourage them to speak up about sexism.”

You’ve received tons of responses from women everywhere, most of which detail their personal experiences with sexism. Which one of these comments struck you the most?

“All of the comments are very striking. Here are two that stick out to me off the top of my head ‘you’re pretty, but you should smile more’ and ‘he is mean to you because he likes you.’”

While most of the comments on your series are supportive, have there been any detractors?

“Definitely. I have received a lot of backlash from posting this series. Someone told me I should be slapped for speaking up about sexism. The negative comments make me more confident about my decision to create Handle With Care, they show me that sexism is still a prevalent issue that needs to be talked about.”

What message do you hope to impart to your audience?

“Ultimately, I want this series to encourage conversation about sexism. I want to get as many people talking about this issue as possible. I also want to show other women that they are not alone in the sexism that they experience.

Lastly, what are you working on next?

“My newest series is titled 5:01 Series. It is a collection of four phrases constructed out of 14,000 striking matches. I plan to light at least one of the pieces on fire. I also have plans for many more series and I am always coming up with something new. Stay tuned!”

Handle With Care This photo is part of a two part photo series that explores sexist phrases that I have been asked at different points in my life. I wanted to represent some of the sexism and the pressure to conform to gender roles that women face in society. I know this is a bit out of the ordinary from what I usually post, I would love to hear your thoughts and if you have any interest in seeing part 2♥️
