While most people see pencil shavings as trash, Japanese artist Haruka Misawa sees them as design inspirations.
Sharpening her pencils one day, Misawa found the patterns on the shavings to be arrestingly beautiful. So she created an entire series on this unconventional material.
Her process involves printing paper with a colour gradation, then rolling it tightly into the shape of a pencil. Misawa then sharpens each roll, with the thinly-sliced pieces blooming into vibrant and stunning flowers. Each one measures between 15 and 40mm in diameter and is completely unique.
It’s amazing how something as simple as pencil shavings can lead to something so beautiful! You can see more of Haruka Misawa’s work over on Instagram.
