Comedian Tim Minchin is bringing the classic Bill Murray film Groundhog Day to life on Broadway

Just when you thought Bill Murray couldn’t get any cooler comes a Broadway musical adaption of his classic 1993 film Groundhog Day.

For the one per cent out there who have not watched this great film, Groundhog Day tells the story of a disgruntled news weatherman Phil Connors (Murray) who becomes stuck in a time loop, cursed to repeat the same day over and over again.

The story, while a great comedy, touches on some very deep issues such as isolation, loneliness, suicide and the importance of embracing life.

Australian musical comedy legend Tim Minchin and the team that brought Roald Dahl’s excellent book Matilda to life as a musical are behind the stage play.

Known for his witty, political and philosophical brand of comedy, Minchin is the perfect choice to adapt this dark, deep and genuinely funny story.

We are looking forward to musical versions of all our favorite moments of the film. Songs about stealing Phil the groundhog, meeting Nancy Taylor, the unforgettable breakfast scene and Connors getting slapped repeatedly for not learning from his ‘past’ days.

Even annoying Ned Ryerson warning Phil about that “doozy” of a puddle is sure to be better when set to a catchy tune.

While Bill Murray is not signed on to reprise his role (it’s been over 20 years since the film after all), we have no doubts that the talented team behind this stage adaption will do the film justice.
