This abandoned island is just minutes from the centre of Manhattan

Just a short distance from Manhattan, nestled between the Bronx and Rikers Island, lies North Brother Island. This place was used as a quarantine centre in 1885 for smallpox and typhoid, then as a rehabilitation centre in the 1950s, but has been abandoned since 1963.

But that doesn’t mean people don’t visit.

While kayaking from New York to Connecticut, Imgur user ‘BallSackFace‘ (sorry about the name!) decided to stop in on North Brother Island to look around.

The adventurous duo spent three house exploring the island, taking photos of their finds.

What we see here is Mother Nature at work for over 50 years, wrapping her foliage around every structure she can find. Pretty awesome, right? And to think that the skyscrapers and the incessant honking of cars is just a few short miles away.
