Argentinian artist pranks her Instagram followers in 5-month ‘perfect life’ art experiment

All those pics of perfect abs, sunkissed skin and designer clothes on Instagram getting you down? Well, in an incredible 5-month journey, one artist decided to play the perfect Insta girl and changed her entire life… all for an art project.

Titled Excellences & Perfections, this project saw artist Amalia Ulman use her Instagram account to stage a scripted performance of her move to LA and, ultimately, her transformation into a perfectly pretentious 20-something girl.

Her Instagram shots saw Ulman in expensive lingerie, dining on healthy brunches, getting her breasts enlarged (which was faked), and making over her entire life until she was completely unrecognisable as her old self.

The entire 5 months was a joke, an experiment.

‘It’s more than a satire’, Ulman says. ‘I wanted to prove that femininity is a construction, and not something biological or inherent to any woman. Women understood the performance much faster than men. They were like, ‘We get it – and it’s very funny… The joke was admitting how much work goes into being a woman and how being a woman is not a natural thing. It’s something you learn’.

Many of Ulman’s 175 photographs will be shown in two exhibitions — Electronic Superhighway at the Whitechapel Gallery in east London and Tate Modern’s Performing for the Camera within the coming weeks.
