This kangaroo grieving for its friend is actually just horny

A few days ago, Evan Switzer from snapped this photo of a kangaroo cradling its friend as it lay there dying. But don’t bring out the tissues yet. As it turns out, the kangaroo wasn’t in grief, but rather, just really horny.

The scene happened in Hervey Bay, Queensland. Switzer was out walking his dog when he saw the male kangaroo chasing off other males then coming back to the female corpse to hug it. Upon noticing the odd behaviour, Switzer rushed home to get his camera and document the tender moment.

‘It was like something you see in the movies. Where someone stands over a body and says ‘no, no. Please don’t die’. It was something amazing to watch. I’ve never seen it in wildlife before’, he said.

Touching, isn’t it? Well, Mark Elridge, principal research scientist at the Australian Museum, believes otherwise.

‘The male has really wet forearms, which is what kangaroos do when they are excited or are overheating — they lick their forearms’, Elridge told Mashable Australia. What it tells me is that the male is very agitated’.

‘Also if you look at those pictures, you can see he’s got an erection. I suspect, what he’s trying to do is to get the female to stand up so he can continue courting’, he adds. ‘Males can be quite aggressive in trying to coerce females into mating’.

Switzer says he doesn’t know what killed the female, but he and a friend buried the body under a mango tree after the male and her joey hopped away.

So in summary: innocent joey witnesses mum die, creepy male tries to hump mum, then joey runs away with said creepy male. Wow, nature.
