How far would you go to keep your child on life support, even after doctors told you he was brain dead? In the case of George Pickering II, he’d go as far as pulling a gun on hospital staff.
Desperate to save his son from doctors who wanted to pull the plug on his life support machine, Pickering arrived at Tomball Regional Medical Centre in Texas with a gun and stayed by his son’s side during a three-hour stand-off.
This was after George’s son suffered a stroke. The hospital then ordered a ‘terminal wean’ which would slowly remove his life support. An organ donation organisation was even notified of George Jr’s impending death.
‘They were moving too fast. The hospital, the nurses, the doctors. I knew if I had three or four hours that night, I would know whether George was brain dead’, George Pickering II said to KPRC.
During that three-hour stand-off, George’s son squeezed his hand three or four times. And in a miraculous turn of events, George III has since made a full recovery!
His son says: ‘There was a law broken, but it was broken for all the right reasons. I’m here now because of it. It was love, it was love’.
Pickering Sr was arrested but charges against him were eventually dropped. Surely this guy wins father of the year, or at least the ‘Craziest Thing My Dad Ever Did To Keep Me Alive’ award.
