If you’re a bookworm, you’ve probably got a list of bookstores you need to visit around the world. And this little gem in Venice, Italy is on our book bucket list: Libreria Acqua Alta.
This tiny bookstore is an attraction in itself with books piled high to the ceiling and gondolas full of classics in the middle of the store. Located in Calle Lunga Santa Maria Formosa, this bookstore not only sells books, but also turns them into furniture (there’s a book staircase you’ve got to climb to get a good view of the adjacent canal). The owner of Libreria Acqua Alta, Luigi Frizzo, opened the store over a decade ago and it has slowly become a success, attracting tourists and locals.
The first room is full of texts on Venice, as well as books on art, cinema, food, and sports. The other room is jampacked with comic books and bestsellers. And you’ll probably find a cat or two sleeping by the books – this bookstore has four of them!
