Susanna Majuri, a Helsinki-based photographer, shoots her subjects at the bottom of a pool to create a dream-world that incites the mind. The background of her images is made of waxed canvas depicting beautiful scenes from nature.
We can see female swimmers chasing a raven, falling from the top of a mountain, surrounded by seagulls in a frightened state, or confronting a bear whose melancholic gaze makes us wonder what is he thinking of.
The artist is very fond of the water medium. ‘The water is the most remarkable. It carries bodies. Water is colour. The shimmer and the deep green. My challenge is to see the reality in a non-traditional light. When I am shooting pictures, I have a premonition that something strange is about to happen’, she muses.
Majuri’s wish is to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. Just like with a good song or a book, we can lose ourselves into other worlds without coming back the same.
The artist is inspired by folklore, poetry, colours and the music of Agnes Obel.
