Beautiful self-depreciating puns highlight the plight of discarded items on the street

San Francisco-based artist Annica Lydenberg gives discarded items on the street a voice to communicate their plights by painting them with witty self-depreciating puns.

Called ‘I’m a Piece of Garbage’, the series shows items like a folding chair, an old computer, and a dart board painted with typographic phrases. They are then photographed by Gui Machado on bright, energetic backgrounds to highlight their beauty.

‘I’m a Piece of Garbage truly brought me back to my childhood roots when my folks would peruse the streets for discarded items or furniture for our apartment’, explained Lydenberg. ‘In our household, what might have been considered a relatively ok item was admired greatly had it come from the street. I never quite outgrew this habit, now turning trash to treasure through sign painting and photography’.
