Vladimir Putin might not be so popular in the West, but he certainly has a few followers back in Russia. Bela Doka, a Hungarian photographer, has introduced us to one of the weirdest fan clubs out there with her photo series ‘Fan Club Putin’, and yes, it’s all about that Vladimir Putin being worshipped like an idol by college students.
‘When I was young I had posters in my room of my idols; in Russia, they have a different idol’, he says. ‘For them, Putin was a pop star’.
Many of the young students in Doka’s photo series participated in Putin-related marches and protests, with some young women describing ‘him as an ideal man, someone they’d want their future husband to resemble’.
These photos were taken back in 2007 so Doka thinks many might’ve moved on from their Putin obsessions by now.
Doka continues, ‘I can imagine right now most of these kids are not even devoted to Putin. It’s like music – you like Bon Jovi for three years and then after maybe you start to like jazz’. Bon Jovi beats jazz any day, just sayin’.
Doka’s photos will be on display at Photo London from May 21 – 24.
