The Perth Mint just released Star Trek coins that have legal tender status

If you’re one of 10,000 people living on the small Polynesian island of Tuvalu, you’re now able to pay for your groceries using Star Trek coins.

The Perth Mint in Western Australia has released 10 coins to celebrate the Star Trek franchise – two from each of The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. Each series will have a coin of their captain and their starship, although at this point only Kirk and the Enterprise are available.

The silver coins have legal tender status on the island of Tuvalu, but at $104.55 apiece (for a $1 coin) and made from 99.9 per cent pure silver, you’d be better off hanging this precious metal in the pool room.

Five thousand pieces have been minted of each coin, so hurry if you want a piece of Star Trek history in your wallet.

Who ever thought Queen Elizabeth II and Captain James Kirk were two sides of the same coin?
