As kids, we all got naptime. We fought against it. Naps were the absolutely worst because you weren’t tired. You could prove it! But that age has caught up with you, so has wisdom. And, the wise nap. But society says adults are too busy to break up their day with a nap.
However, new studies have surfaced proving cognitive function would benefit from a nap during the day. There would be an increase in alertness and an improvement in motor skills with a simple power nap. Improved perception and memory consolidation are other positive effects from a brief daytime snooze.
A study conducted at the Beijing University of Technology, examined the effect of napping on athletes after training. They discovered naps could improve brain function and visual systems, and promote physical and mental recovery – a result in line with previous research demonstrating that napping can facilitate motor memory consolidation.
Even when compared to chugging a cup of coffee, a nap wins. In 2008, Sara Mednick author of “Take A Nap! Change Your Life” studied the effects of drinking 200mg of caffeine in comparison to a 60-90 minute nap. When involving memory tasks, nappers performed better.
These studies have since persuaded some businesses to incorporate naps at work. Some of which design nap rooms to fit into their office space. According to research, the best time to nap is between 2 and 4pm. This time would maintain a good balance of slow wave and REM sleep after being awake for 6-8 hours.
So right after lunch, there is no shame in asking your boss for a brief nap to get your memory and cognitive functions an extra boost. Try it!
