Just what can we expect from the oldest time capsule in America? Buried in the cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House by Paul Revere and Samuel Adams way back in 1795, it was recently excavated, opened and revealed to have contained silver and copper coins dating from 1652 to 1855, a silver plaque, a copper medal depicting George Washington, newspapers, a paper impression of the Seal of the Commonwealth, calling cards, and the title page from the Massachusetts Colony Records.
What an anti-climax! With nothing titillating by today’s standards, it should have remained buried. As it is, they will go on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston before being re-buried at the State House again. Apparently, that’s how time capsules like to be treated.
