Bristol-based gardener and tree surgeon Tom Poulsom had been building LEGO replicas of cars, trucks, and spaceships for over a year when on one fateful day, his true passion literally landed in front of him. ‘One day during a break from digging in a customer’s garden a Robin Red Breast landed on my fork handle’, he tells twobirdersandbinoculars. ‘This was the eureka moment behind what is now the LEGO Bird Project’.
He’s been recreating birds in LEGO form ever since. So far, Poulsom has made 70 designs, and he plans to recreate over 1% (about over 100) of the world’s bird species in LEGO. It takes him anywhere from one evening to several days, depending on the bird’s complexity, to create a design.
And thanks to 10,000 supporters over on LEGO Ideas, the company will now be producing 3 of his birds: a hummingbird, a blue jay, and a robin. The 580-piece LEGO bird set will be available for purchase in January 2015 for $44.99. You can also check out his entire LEGO bird collection here.
