Newcastle. It’s that biggish town above Sydney, right? As Australia’s seventh largest city, Newcastle is making a name for itself as one of Australia’s best kept secrets. On the travel site, Lonely Planet, for instance, it was named one of the best 10 places in the world to visit. It’s little wonder, then, that one of the Lost At E Minor offices is located right in the heart of it.
As a Newcastle resident, I’ve been asked by our friends American Express to share my favourite small, local businesses to support the national Shop Small movement. Go on over to the Shop Small Australia website and take a look at my Shop Small Walk map, which you can print out and take with you while exploring my recommendations.
Here’s a rundown on my favourite small Newcastle businesses.
1.Baked Uprising (21-25 Downie St. Maryville, NSW. Ph: 0417 487 641)
Quite simply, the best bakery I’ve ever been to. The bread is everything it should be and, oh, so much more.
Go the whole hog and order the full Miche. At $16, this will feed you the entire week. And it’s heavenly.
2. The Edwards (148 Parry St. Newcastle West, NSW. Ph: 024965 3845)
Founded by one of the members of the band Silverchair. The Edwards is a bar, restaurant, cafe, coin-op laundry, and so much more.
The beers on tap are hard to beat.
3.Subo (551D Hunter St. Newcastle West, NSW. Ph: 02 4023 4048)
Newcastle’s finest restaurant. It’s a small venue, so book early.
The seasonal five course menu, what else?
4. Abicus(103 Darby St. Cooks Hill, NSW. Ph: 02 4023 2165)
