A foot tour of Newcastle supporting our favourite small businesses

Newcastle. It’s that biggish town above Sydney, right? As Australia’s seventh largest city, Newcastle is making a name for itself as one of Australia’s best kept secrets. On the travel site, Lonely Planet, for instance, it was named one of the best 10 places in the world to visit. It’s little wonder, then, that one of the Lost At E Minor offices is located right in the heart of it.

As a Newcastle resident, I’ve been asked by our friends American Express to share my favourite small, local businesses to support the national Shop Small movement. Go on over to the Shop Small Australia website and take a look at my Shop Small Walk map, which you can print out and take with you while exploring my recommendations.

Here’s a rundown on my favourite small Newcastle businesses.

1.Baked Uprising (21-25 Downie St. Maryville, NSW. Ph: 0417 487 641)
Quite simply, the best bakery I’ve ever been to. The bread is everything it should be and, oh, so much more.

Must buy
Go the whole hog and order the full Miche. At $16, this will feed you the entire week. And it’s heavenly.

2. The Edwards (148 Parry St. Newcastle West, NSW. Ph: 024965 3845)
Founded by one of the members of the band Silverchair. The Edwards is a bar, restaurant, cafe, coin-op laundry, and so much more.

Must Buy
The beers on tap are hard to beat.

3.Subo (551D Hunter St. Newcastle West, NSW. Ph: 02 4023 4048)
Newcastle’s finest restaurant. It’s a small venue, so book early.

Must buy
The seasonal five course menu, what else?

4. Abicus(103 Darby St. Cooks Hill, NSW. Ph: 02 4023 2165)
Newcastle’s premier fashion destination, smack bang in the middle of the iconic Derby St. strip.

Must buy
Buy a vinyl record while you shop for clothes.

5. Coal & Cedar(380-382 Hunter St. Newcastle, NSW)
This is a speakeasy bar in the finest New York fashion, The vibe is cool yet, relaxed. A must to start or finish a night out.

Must buy
The Hendricks Gin with cucumber. Unbeatable!

6.Studio Melt(Shop 4a, 119 Hunter St. Newcastle, NSW. Ph: 02 4927 0880)
Studio Melt curates those cool little things you just desperately want to have around your home. Unique shop selling great quality goods.

Must buy
I buy the hand-made postcards. A nice little touch on any gift.

7. Bocados Spanish Kitchen (25 King St. Newcastle NSW. Ph: 02 4925 2801)
Newcastle’s best Spanish restaurant. It’s consistently full, with a great vibe, and the menu never disappoints.

Must buy
The tapas selection is simple but perfectly put together.

8. Estabar (61 Shorthand Esp. Newcastle, NSW. Ph: 02 4927 1222)
Perched across the road from Newcastle beach, this cafe continues to produce outstanding food and coffee, featuring the best local produce around.

Must buy
A large flat white to go with the stunning ocean view.
