What are the police like in your country? Testosterone-fuelled gun-wielding maniacs, corrupt as the day is long or apathetic cynics with little to do other than stop you riding your bike on the sidewalk? If none of these stereotypes fit then lucky you, but even so it’s unlikely you as much of a fun-loving police force as the residents of Reykjavik.
For a long time, as in many countries, police in Iceland were regarded as imposing and were used by parents to scare their children into obedience. In recent years however, the boys in blue in the country’s capital have taken steps to counteract this misconception.
The official Instagram account of the Reykjavik police force is a non-stop hoot, a barrel of laughs filled with heart-warming moments in the officers’ daily work. While pictures of policemen holding puppies, posing with an ice cream or busting a kick flip with some young skateboarders don’t do much to inspire a sense of fear and authority, there definitely a welcome change to what most of us are used to.
Even the police in the UK (who thankfully don’t carry guns) could do with a pink bicycle from time to time!
