Marc McAndrews’s newest series and book Nevada Rose: Inside the American Brothel is a brilliant portrait study of Nevada’s legal brothels. There is an obvious sense of delicacy and compassion in his images. For such a taboo topic, the photos don’t exude the almost expected air of seediness or depravity, but are wonderfully humanizing and revealing.
Like much of McAndrew’s work, the collection of images functions cumulatively — they build upon one another strengthening an underlying narrative arc. They are crisp and sharp — staunch in their presentation of fact and mystique.
