If you’re sporting some decent chops, and you have some time (and money) to spare, you can join the Beard Team USA Trip to Iceland and Norway for the 2011 World Beard and Moustache Championships between May 8 to May 19. Yes, salute the hirsute!

To be held in Trondheim, Norway, on May 14, 2011, the World Beard and Moustache Championships is a big deal. A BIG DEAL. Apparently, the United States is the ‘world’s new facial hair super power, having captured twelve world championship titles out of eighteen categories plus overall at the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Anchorage, Alaska in 2009′. So if you have a good handlebar, if you can connect the dots, then the next major event in the ‘sport of bearding will be the Beard Team USA Nationals in Bend, Oregon on June 5, 2010, where $5000 in cash prizes will go to best beards and moustaches in the USA’. Metronomy are a cool little London-based group headed by producer and remix extraordinaire, Joseph Mount. The sound sits somewhere between Autechre and Vitalic: clanging keyboards and body-gurning beats laced with an undercurrent of ominous electronica. It’s not as inaccessible as much of the more twisted electro-based stuff out there at the moment, although it retains an edge perhaps unpalatable for some ears. Yet there’s a catchiness to it that is clearly roping in the crowds: their live shows are a spectacle, complete with synchronised dancing and flashing costumes. If that floats your boat, they’re playing for free at the Tate Britain, London, on 27 September.

My friend Josh Van Horne, a local Baltimore artist, did this amazing mural in our neighborhood that depicts the history of this warehouse-laden area.
