The Wooden Birds’ first album, Magnolia, is out on Barsuk Records. Fans of the AmAnSet will recognize Andrew Kenny’s voice and songwriting immediately, but the arrangements on Magnolia are more vocal and percussion heavy than anything he’s done before. Full of guitar-top drumming and beautiful harmonies, and anchored by Kenny’s percolating, vibey bass, Magnolia rolls by like a float down an ambient indie-rock river on a lazy summer day — as this standout track, Hometown Fantasy, suggests.

Describing their sound as ‘nihilist suicide pop’, Rome-based quartet Spiritual Front draws immediate comparisons to Nick Cave, but their approach to dark themes have a hint of irreverence — they inject unexpected doo-wop flares and new wave bombast to their atmospheric neofolk. Their latest album, Armageddon Gigalo, is a beautiful and catchy masterpiece for fans of Death In June, Sol Invictus, and even latter-day Duran Duran.
