At a time when mainstream cinema seems to be getting more palatable and boring, it’s fantastic that an artist is still making films that challenge and confuse. Writer and director Lars von Trier is an excellent filmmaker. The cinematography throughout this movie is phenomenal, in particular the first scene and selected close-ups. It’s also a tight script, where the tension does not abate for a moment. I’ve seen a few arthouse movies that just weren’t good enough to make it mainstream. Lars von Trier has the skills but chooses to confront, and for that reason his films will be discussed for decades, instead of months.
Sure, they’re somewhat creepy, photographic looking, and sit on the morbid side. But suffice to say, these realist paintings by Vincent Desiderio are spectacular. Read more
The Obama campaign was one of the most visually effective in recent history, brilliantly tapping modern marketing concepts and design to get its message across. The deceptively simple logo they chose stemmed from an amalgamation of a lot of different concepts the Obama designers came up with. Logo Design Love just posted all the different looks that weren’t used.
The philosophy of a beginning is to me, a wonderful concept. I really enjoy flicking through the back catalogues of a musician and discovering their origin, then tracing their musical journey to the present. So for American-born, Paris-based sister duo CocoRosie, who released their third album The Adventure of Ghosthouse and Stillborn to much acclaim, making the trip to their beginnings is more than worth the journey: their debut album, Le Maison de Mon Reve (released back in 2004) was a gentle stroll through their pop and classical influences, which melt together seamlessly into a backdrop for their unique and enchanting voices.
This house on two levels of medium size was built on a hill on a trapezoidal plot in a suburb in the district of Hyogo, overlooking Osaka Bay, with whitewashed walls and a sloping pitched roof. Read more

Grinning Cat is a beautiful electronic album from prodigious Japanese producer, Susumu Yokota. It borrows liberally from the melodic melancholy of classical music and features subtle drum loops throughout. We interviewed him about the artwork that he creates for each release. Read more
Abstracted geometric forms, peculiar clockwork pieces, and a sense of childhood play; I can’t quite pinpoint why I love the jewellery designs of Sydney creative, Elke Kramer, but I do know that her jewellery is unique and off-beat, yet widely accessible and wearable. Read more
