Originally from Northern California, Amber Gray is now based in Manhattan, where she shoots for magazines such as Dansk, FQ, and Trace. Of her photography, she says: ‘I like to portray strong, vexing characters that have something more behind their gaze. I’m very inspired by music and the dramatic new wave characters of my childhood who conjured so many bizarre fantasies that still fuel my imagination to this day’.

WE'RE THINKING

There isn’t much to be said about these photos, they speak for themselves. I find myself revisiting them every other week or so just to be reminded of their brilliance. This entertaining documentary follows a group of seemingly clichéd American teenagers in their last year of high school. Through a comprehensive recording of their lives it reminds us that, when examining anything in detail, there is no such thing as a cliché. The naivety and hope of each student shines through, providing a memorable and accurate portrait of a middle-American high school. Read more

WE'RE TRAVELLING TO

We asked some of New York’s more creative residents where they like to hang out in the city, and got a mixed bag of responses back. We’ll be running their insider tips over the next few weeks. This is illustrator Marcos Chin on his favorite arcade bar, aptly named … wait for it … Barcade: ‘Barcade is a time-warp into the 1980s when going to the arcade was the major past time for many of my friends and I. Lined throughout the space are a series of classic 25 cent video arcade games, like Q-bert, Donkey Kong, Arkanoid and Tetris. There’s also a pool table near the back of the space, and a terrific selection of beers to choose from. And yes, you can drink-and-play.
