When I first moved to New York in 2006, I lived in a shared loft space in Williamsburg with four others. It was quite an introduction to inner-city living, especially given that I’d literally shifted across from the beaches and sunshine of Bondi, Sydney. As such, it was a dizzying period, full of discovery. Rufus Wainwright’s epic, broodingly lush album Want Two was the soundtrack to it all. I had it on my iTunes collection at the time, without even knowing it, until it magically burst into my headphones one day whilst tapping away frenetically on my laptop. Oh man! What an album, what a voice, and what a beautifully composed and arranged selection of songs, a favorite amongst them being the rolling piano ballad, This Love Affair.
New York city-based illustrator Mike Marsicano depicts his New York in its gritty, unsavory, captivating glory in a recent series of illustrations, integrating timeless quotes, poignant cityscapes and sharp portraits of some of the characters that overrun the city. Read more
We Make Carpets are designers Stijn van der Vleuten and Marcia Nolte and visual artist Bob Waardenburg. They create weird and wonderful carpets from objects that you’d more likely find in a pantry or kid’s bedroom. Comfortable? No. Practical? No. But, really, who give a damn. Read more
The very talented Jess Snow, the first video artist to be featured by Female Persuasion — the original site for provocative and political female artists — has created this ethereal short video for Lost At E Minor. Look closely at the froth of this latte and you’ll see a portrait carved out amongst the grains and milk. It’s a truly a work of art and it’s a feature of the coffee served at Richmond, Melbourne cafe Flavours of Lakhoum. Check, please!
Cat-haters, or those simply too jaded by a lifetime of LOLcats, will get a kick out of this site, which wryly refuses to be wowed by any degree of feline adorability. But then, cat worshippers like myself will also enjoy the site, as it is still full of cats n’ kittens. Read more
